A new study shows there’s no ‘magic bullet’ for treating erectile dysfunction. A new medication known as Viagra Connect, is approved by the FDA to treat the condition.
—The article originally appeared in the May/June 2012 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Viagra, a popular treatment for erectile dysfunction, was developed to help men get or keep an erection hard enough for sex. But it isn’t just erectile dysfunction that’s getting treated.
This study is a follow-up of a clinical trial involving more than 3,200 men who had been prescribed Viagra. In the trial, the researchers used data from a single case of erectile dysfunction.
“This was a real breakthrough in treating the condition,” says Dr. Susan Smith, an endocrinologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
The study involved 2,000 patients who had been given Viagra Connect. Patients were asked to complete a questionnaire, which included questions about their erectile dysfunction. Viagra Connect was the first treatment for the condition. The study found that men who took Viagra Connect had a significantly increased chance of achieving and maintaining an erection when sexually aroused, according to the study’s findings.
Viagra was also associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, according to the study’s findings, and an increased risk of death and stroke in men taking the medication.
The study was published May 18, 2012 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The study, funded by Johnson & Johnson, was part of the “Clinical Trial of Viagra Connect for the Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction.”
Smith says the findings were “very exciting.”
“I would definitely take Viagra Connect if it was going to be a magic bullet,” she says. “It was a great first-in-class treatment for the condition.”
Viagra Connect has been the subject of extensive research. The FDA approved it in 1998.
“This medication is a non-invasive alternative to Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction,” says Dr. Richard J. Stahl, a professor of urology at the University of Miami College of Medicine in Miami Beach, who was not involved in the trial. “It’s much more affordable than Viagra.”
Stahl, a urologist, said in a statement that the study had “no bearing on the treatment of erectile dysfunction, which is an important consideration for all men.”
Viagra Connect, which is a brand name for the medication sildenafil citrate, is available as a generic drug and as an over-the-counter version.
The study involved 3,200 men who were given Viagra Connect. The men were followed for 12 months to determine their effectiveness in achieving and maintaining an erection.
“It’s great to see that men who took Viagra had a higher success rate of achieving and maintaining an erection than men who didn’t take the medication,” says Dr. John M. Fink, a urologist at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles who was not involved in the trial.
“This is one of the first medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and it certainly shows how a medication can be used safely,” he says. “That’s why we’re excited to see how these results compare with Viagra Connect.”
Viagra Connect, however, is not the only treatment for erectile dysfunction.
“Viagra has been a great treatment for men,” says Dr. David A. Auerbach, a urologist at the New England Journal of Medicine in Boston.
Auerbach says he and his colleagues found no statistically significant improvements in the number of successful intercourse attempts in men taking Viagra Connect. He says it’s not clear why they were so successful.
“It’s really reassuring to know that there are no placebo effects,” he says. “If one medication was a placebo, then there would be no effect, and men taking the medication would actually get a better response.”
The men in the study were given a placebo before sex. They took Viagra Connect, which worked just as well as the placebo, and the men then completed a questionnaire.

This past weekend, a new bookThe Evolution of a Viagra Salesmanwas published inThe New York Timeswith a cover image of the character of a male salesman and the writer of the book.
In the book, Jamie Randall is a salesman who is unable to get or keep an erection. He eventually ends up in the hospital for a heart attack, and then ends up in the hospital with a stroke, which he heals. He ends up on a fertility drug called "the Viagra" and has been in that situation for years.
The drug is also used to treat a form of erectile dysfunction. It is used in men to treat the condition of impotence.
But it is also used to treat the condition of heart failure. It works by blocking an enzyme that is required in the body for making blood.
The drug can be used in the treatment of heart failure in people who have had heart disease and are unable to get an erection, or people who have coronary artery disease.
It may also be used to treat people with type 2 diabetes, or people with high blood pressure. But because the drug has not been shown to be effective in this area, it will not be used as a treatment for heart failure.
